Belarusian university training for Zimbabwean rescue workers

MINSK, 20 May (BelTA) – The Republic of Zimbabwe is interested in getting its personnel trained in the Civil Protection University of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry. The relevant statement was made by Zimbabwean Minister of Local Government, Public Works, and National Housing July Moyo as he visited the university on 20 May, BelTA has learned.

July Moyo also expressed interest in fire-fighting and rescue equipment and vehicles of Belarusian make. He also said that Zimbabwe is ready to send a working group to Belarus in order to in detail study the experience of training rescue workers and technologies used to deal with emergencies.

While in Belarus the delegation met with First Deputy Emergencies Minister Aleksandr Khudoleyev. The Zimbabwean side expressed gratitude for Belarusian humanitarian aid, which was delivered in April 2019.

BelTA reported earlier that the Cyclone Idai hit the African continent on 15 March, bringing torrential rains and squall winds as fast as 177kmph. The cyclone caused considerable damage to municipal and rural infrastructure in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The governments of the cyclone-hit countries appealed for aid to the international community. Zimbabwe officially declared a national catastrophe state.

Belarus was one of the countries to receive an official request to provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief for the cyclone victims. Belarus’ Council of Ministers passed the relevant resolution upon approval of the head of state. Belarus’ humanitarian aid included sugar, flour, beef, canned meat for children, soap, blankets, washing powder, clothes and shoes for adults and children, school supplies, mugs and cutlery worth more than Br656,000. The aid was delivered by air. The humanitarian aid was accompanied by specialists of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry.
