Belarusian rescue workers busy fighting forest fires in Turkey

MINSK, 1 May (BelTA) – Belarusian fire-fighting units are now busy helping fight forest fires in Turkey, the press service of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry told BelTA.

The Belarusian specialists have carried out a number of test flights and are now ready to extinguish forest fires in Turkey. A team of seven specialists on board a Mi-8 helicopter keeps an eye on the situation in forested mountains. The Mi-8 helicopter helps fight fires and can also deliver local rescue workers to fire outbreaks.

In 2017 Belarusian fire fighters in Turkey performed 91 flights to drop over 1,100 tonnes of water and transport over 200 passengers. Forest fires break out in Turkey every year. Belarusian airmen are experienced in fighting fires in hard-to-reach areas.

The press service also said that the fire safety situation in Belarusian forests had been upgraded to class three. Due to the change Mi-2 helicopters of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry continue patrolling southeastern parts of the country in order to detect forest fires early on. If necessary, Mi-8 helicopters and a Mi-26, the helicopter with the world’s largest carrying capacity, will be deployed to fight fires.
