Belarusian police told to crack down on drug dealers instead of trivial offences

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – Belarusian law enforcement agencies should step up efforts to fight those, who deliver illegal drugs into the country, instead of chasing after trivial offences. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement during the session of the Security Council of Belarus on 27 February, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed: “We crack down on drug addicts but what about those, who deliver illegal drugs to Belarus in job lots? They are the key criminals. If police care only for numbers, it will never be able to effectively eradicate the channels used to smuggle drugs into the country. Certainly, it is much easier to get fast results by chasing trivial offences but the real situation will only get worse.”

The president pointed out that an entire set of measures to fight the illegal turnover of drugs and counteract drug addiction is in place. The Interior Ministry reports successful work in this direction. However, the head of state wondered whether the relevant law enforcement agencies only work for the sake of better statistics. “Are the reported accomplishments only a front for the fight against small drug dealers or drug addicts?” wondered Alexander Lukashenko.
