Belarusian peat industry development strategy in the pipeline

MINSK, 22 July (BelTA) – A strategy to guide the development of the national peat industry in 2021-2025 is being developed in Belarus. Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich made the statement as he visited the peat briquette factory Ditva, the ministry’s press service told BelTA.
The official said: “The document is nearly ready. Peat industry enterprises will have to accomplish important tasks: increase sales, increase earnings, improve quality parameters, which means higher labor productivity and higher salaries.”
The peat industry plays an important role in Belarus’ energy security, the official added. Peat accounts for about 15% of the total consumption of local fuels. “All the conditions are available for increasing this figure,” the energy minister is convinced.
In line with instructions given by the head of state a systemic approach is used to modernize the basic production assets of peat enterprises by leveraging modern equipment and technologies. New methods to exploit peat fields are being introduced. “Ditva is not an exception. It is an exemplary peat-producing enterprise, a modern manufacturing facility, one of the best,” the official stated.
About 2 million tonnes of peat is extracted in Belarus every year. Belarus is the world’s fourth largest peat extractor and the world’s top peat briquette manufacturer. The peat industry employs about 3,000 people.
Viktor Karankevich was made familiar with the operation of the enterprise and met with the workers, who asked him about prospects of the peat industry after the launch of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The workers also wondered about the possibility of selling more dry peat dust to OAO Krasnoselskstroymaterialy, about the use of electric heaters for heating purposes and hot water supply. Other topics were also mentioned. The energy minister gave answers to all the questions.
