Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff downsized

MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – The central staff of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been reduced by one third as a result of optimization efforts, BelTA learned from Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei after his meeting with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.

Vladimir Makei said: “The reduction has already happened. The central staff has been reduced by roughly one third. The diplomatic institutions abroad have been reduced by 15%.”

In his words, approaches to optimizing the operation of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the diplomatic service as a whole had been run past the head of state before that. “Instructions were given to rely on skills instead of numbers. As a result, the central staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been considerably downsized. But it will in no way reduce our effectiveness. Contrariwise, the structure of our central staff is geared towards effectively handling the tasks given by the head of state,” noted Vladimir Makei.

A similar approach is used with regard to diplomatic institutions abroad. “We will have to optimize their work this year. A number of the diplomatic institutions will be reduced,” said the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs.

Vladimir Makei specified that close attention will be paid to the countries, interaction with which produces great results. “This is why the head of state was informed about the approaches to further improvement of the work of our diplomatic missions. These approaches were approved. Instructions were given to pay close attention to work in priority countries on all the continents,” said Vladimir Makei.

The president also gave instructions to work out a system of morale incentives for diplomatic service personnel as part of the optimization campaign. “We are working on it. Next year we intend to celebrate the 100th anniversary since Belarus’ diplomatic service was established. The president gave instructions to submit concrete proposals with this in mind,” said the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs.
