Belarus views UNESCO as lab of ideas, instrument for building capacity

MINSK, 5 November (BelTA) – Belarus views UNESCO as a laboratory of ideas and an instrument for building capacity for an intercultural dialogue, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told media on 5 November, BelTA informs.

According to Dmitry Mironchik, Paris is hosting the 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference until 18 November. Attending the event is a delegation from Belarus led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alena Kupchyna.

“Being a member of the organization for more than 60 years, our country attaches great importance to cooperation with UNESCO, this unique platform of international multipronged cooperation in the education, scientific, cultural and communications sectors. Belarus views UNESCO as a laboratory of ideas and an instrument for building capacity for an intercultural dialogue, sustainable development and strengthening of peace as well as addressing other important social and economic issues through education,” Dmitry Mironchik noted.

On 5 November Alena Kupchyna is expected to deliver her speech at the 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference to provide priorities of Belarus’ activity in UNESCO. The deputy minister is also set to meet with UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova. “The parties will take stock of the progress made in the implementation of agreements reached during Irina Bokova’s visit to Belarus in April 2014 as well as the prospects of cooperation between Belarus and UNESCO,” said Dmitry Mironchik. Apart from that, Alena Kupchyna and Irina Bokova will share opinions on one of the key tasks of the national delegation at the General Conference session, which is the expansion of the list of the Belarusian tangible and intangible cultural heritage in the UNESCO World Heritage List, projects in education and scientific areas.

The deputy minister is also expected to hold a number of bilateral meetings aimed at strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation between Belarus and France, the EU in general, the spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added. Talks are also planned with the Minister of State of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development.
