Belarus urges UN Human Rights Council not to politicize freedom of assembly issues

MINSK, 23 June (BelTA) – Belarus guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and association provided that the relevant legal requirements are observed, Belarus’ representative said at Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and of association during the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

“Once again, we note the Special Rapporteur’s attempt to interpret the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association beyond the definition agreed upon by states in Articles 21 and 22 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The Covenant established that this right is not absolute and may be restricted in accordance with the law when necessary in the interests of national or public security, public order, the protection of public health or morals, or the protection of the rights and freedoms of others,” the Belarusian diplomat said.

According to the representative of Belarus, these provisions apply to the exercise of this right both in real life and in digital formats, the use of which is becoming increasingly widespread and is regulated in accordance with legislation.

“Belarus guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and association, provided that the relevant legal requirements are observed. Claims to the contrary do not correspond to reality and are being circulated for politicized purposes. We call on the Special Rapporteur not to make generalizations and draw conclusions based on individual opinions obtained from 152 persons. Such a sample cannot be regarded as a global study,” the Belarusian representative said.
