Belarus urged to ratify protocol to eliminate illicit trade in tobacco products

MINSK, 12 April (BelTA) – The World Health Organization (WHO) urges Belarus to ratify the protocol to eliminate illicit trade in tobacco products, BelTA learned from Lyudmila Naroichik, Deputy Head Physician of the National Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Public Health, on 12 April.

According to the source, more than 20 countries have ratified the protocol to eliminate illicit trade in tobacco products. WHO encourages nations to take a more active part in the process. “I think our country will get down to considering the document soon,” said Lyudmila Naroichik.

The protocol obliges the signatories to control supplies of tobacco products. Global tracking solutions can be utilized to identify tobacco goods, their manufacturer, the equipment used to make the goods, and track the delivery routes.

According to Lyudmila Naroichik, counterfeited tobacco goods are not a major problem in Belarus since a very rigid system to control their production, licensing, and trade is in place.
