Belarus, UNEP agree on importance of cooperation within international environmental conventions

MINSK, 30 March (BelTA) – Belarus and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) stress the importance of continuing expert cooperation within international environmental conventions, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA following the meeting of Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Yuri Ambrazevich with Director of the UNEP Regional Bureau for Europe Jan Dusik.

The parties exchanged opinions on the current cooperation and priority areas of cooperation between Belarus and the UNEP. “The sides emphasized the importance of continuing expert cooperation within international environmental conventions served by the UNEP (Basel Convention, Stockholm Convention, CITES and others),” the press service said.

Taking into account the signing of the Minamata Convention on Mercury by Belarus in September 2014 and preparations to ratify it, the parties discussed the issues related to the cooperation with the UNEO in strengthening Belarus’ national potential in the sector.

The Belarusian permanent representative also apprised Jan Dusik of the planned events to be held in Belarus and also outside its borders, including on the UN Geneva platform, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. Yuri Ambrazevich invited the UNEP authorities to take part in these events in Minsk and Geneva.
