Belarus, Turkey show interest in education, scientific contacts

MINSK, 17 April (BelTA) – Belarus and Turkey are interested in establishing and developing direct contacts between universities and scientific organizations. The matter was discussed at a meeting which Belarus’ Education Minister Igor Karpenko held at the Turkish Council of Higher Education, BelTA has learned.

The parties stressed the importance of the possibility for students and specialists from Belarus and Turkey to participate in events aimed at the demonstration of the educational, sci-tech and innovative potential of the two countries. “One of the priorities of the Belarusian-Turkish cooperation is the establishment and development of direct links between institutions of higher education and scientific organizations,” the press center said.

Igor Karpenko was in Turkey as part of the Belarusian delegation. In addition to negotiations in the council which oversees the activities of all public and private educational institutions of the country, as well as issues of international cooperation, he met with Minister of National Education of Turkey Ziya Selcuk. The parties discussed the legal framework of bilateral cooperation in education.

The ministry also provided details regarding the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in education, which was signed during the official visit of Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko to Turkey. The agreement envisages the establishment and development of bilateral relations between the educational institutions of the two countries, the exchange of experience in the development of the education system, the use of new technologies. Belarus and Turkey also intend to exchange students and teachers, university scientists, to allocate places for higher and postgraduate education in educational institutions. The parties are set to inform each other on the mutual recognition of education documents and academic degrees. The agreement creates the necessary legal framework for expanding and deepening contacts between countries across the entire spectrum of educational activities, attracting Turkish citizens to study in Belarus.
