Belarus to organize discussion at UN on Chernobyl in 2019

MINSK, 25 February (BelTA) - Belarus intends to organize a round of discussions at the UN headquarters on Chernobyl in 2019, Belarus Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas said as he met met with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction Ms. Mami Mizutori, BelTA learned from Belarus Permanent Mission in Geneva.

Andrei Dapukiunas and Mami Mizutori discussed the status and prospects for cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, preparations for the 6th session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction which will be held in Geneva in May 2019.

Special attention was paid to the practical side of cooperation between Belarus and the UN in implementing the General Assembly’s resolution on persistent legacy of the Chernobyl disaster. This year Belarus intends to organize a round of discussions at the UN headquarters involving members of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Chernobyl.

The discussions will be themed around ways to maintain international focus on the problems of development and rehabilitation of the territories affected by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and the search for practical assistance for the implementation of specific projects to promote their social and  economic development.
