Belarus to advance cooperation with International Maritime Organization

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to the UK Sergei Aleinik discussed Belarus-IMO cooperation prospects as he met with Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization Kitack Lim, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

During the meeting the sides discussed prospects of Belarus’ cooperation with the International Maritime Organization. A number of joint steps due to Belarus’ accession to the organization were sketched out.

The Ambassador handed over to the Secretary General the documents on Belarus’ accession to the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic of 1965, the protocol of 1988 to the International Load Line Convention of 1966, and the protocol of 1988 to the International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea of 1974.

Sergei Aleinik also took part in a session of the Council of the International Maritime Organization at the organization’s HQ. During the session the Ambassador made a speech on the occasion of Belarus’ accession to the International Maritime Organization.

The International Maritime Organization is an agency of the United Nations Organization. It was established on the basis of the Convention on the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization of 1948. In 1982 the organization was renamed into the International Maritime Organization.

The International Maritime Organization was established with a view to enabling cooperation between governments in the state regulation of technical aspects of merchant shipping in addition to adopting norms and standards on safe shipping, preventing environmental pollution, protecting human lives at sea, dealing with the administrative and legal matters concerning discriminatory restrictions on shipping industry and measures to remove them.
