Belarus teams up with international partners for major project to achieve SDGs

MINSK, 7 July (BelTA) – Belarus and international partners are running a large-scale project to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), BelTA learned from the press service of the Council of the Republic following the meeting of Deputy Chairperson of the Council of the Republic, National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Marianna Shchetkina and members of the National Council for Sustainable Development, with UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki and heads of other UN agencies operating in Belarus.

Top on the agenda was coordination of the further efforts of the National Council for Sustainable Development and international partners to achieve Sustainable Development Goals. “Marianna Shchetkina noted that once the national architecture for achieving SDGs is up and running, one should proceed to elaborating and implementing, together with international partners, a more ambitious project that will cut across core objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals,” the press service noted.

The number one task today is elaboration of a concept of the National Strategy for Sustainable Social and Economic Development for the period till 2035. The work on the document has been undertaken by the government. Another vital task is to come up with a single coordination system for effective programs.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. The SDGs include social and economic development issues, like poverty, hunger, inequality, climate change, water, sanitation, etc. The formal name for the SDGs is: "Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" or "2030 Agenda". All the 17 SDGs are adjusted for Belarus. The work is carried out by the National Coordinator for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, the National Council for Sustainable Development (it includes representatives of all government agencies), partners, civil society and international organizations. All their proposals will find their way into the National Strategy for Sustainable Social and Economic Development for the period till 2035. Program documents and legislative acts will also be based on the 2030 Agenda.
