Belarus suggests UNIDO project to support cooperation between medium-income countries

MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) – Belarus would like the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to develop an interregional project to support the formation of partnerships and schemes for interaction between medium-income countries for the sake of assisting their innovative development. Prime Minister of Belarus Andrei Kobyakov voiced the proposal as he met with UNIDO Under Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs Wu Hongbo and UNIDO Director General LI Yong on 22 April, BelTA has learned. The meeting took place during the 22nd international telecommunication industry expo TIBO 2015 in Minsk.

Belarus suggests UNIDO project to support cooperation between medium-income countriesWu Hongbo and LI Yong are expected to take part in the international conference on sustainable industrial development in medium-income countries of Europe and Central Asia in Minsk on 23-24 April. Andrei Kobyakov remarked that Belarus highly appreciates UNIDO’s contribution and the contribution of the Director General to the organization of the forum. The Prime Minister said he was confident that among other things the conference would help establish partnerships and schemes for interaction between medium-income countries for the sake of assisting their innovative development. “On our part we suggest the development of an interregional UNIDO project that will support this effort,” noted the Belarusian head of government. “If you are interested, we are ready to get involved in the process right away.”

Belarus suggests UNIDO project to support cooperation between medium-income countriesAccording to Andrei Kobyakov, the promising areas may include the improvement of the regulatory environment and the infrastructure for the sake of developing innovative entrepreneurship. Apart from that, Belarus is interested in tapping into UNIDO’s potential for polishing the government program on innovation-driven development for the next five years, for attracting foreign investors to the commercialization of Belarusian science-intensive technologies, for improving public private partnership mechanisms. “On the whole, our country is interested in taking a leading position in the group of medium-income countries in matters of developing trade in innovative products,” said the Prime Minister.

In his words, Belarus has already made quite a serious step in the development of the necessary infrastructure for arranging international events in various spheres. Andrei Kobyakov added that Belarus is ready to become the venue for multilateral forums under the aegis of the UN Secretariat and UNIDO.Belarus suggests UNIDO project to support cooperation between medium-income countries
