Belarus, Spain mull over agreements on legal assistance

MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) - Belarus and Spain are considering concluding agreements on legal assistance, Belarus’ Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky told BelTA while commenting on the results of his working visit to Madrid.

The prospects for bilateral cooperation were reviewed during a meeting with Spain’s minister of justice. Among other things the parties considered concluding agreements between Belarus and Spain on legal assistance in civil, economic and criminal matters and on extradition. If we manage to reach an agreement, this will be a major step towards ensuring the protection of the rights and legitimate interests of our citizens in Spain and Spanish citizens residing in Belarus,” Oleg Slizhevsky noted.

In Madrid, the justice ministries of Belarus and Spain signed a memorandum of understanding. According to it, the ministries will share expertise, get familiar with new trends and relevant developments in the field of justice, including through the organization of workshops, seminars and training courses for experts of the two countries. According to Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky, the signing of the memorandum is the first step towards the development of closer cooperation between the two countries in legal matters.

“It is important to note that this memorandum has become the first document in recent years the Belarusian justice ministry has signed with the colleagues from a state, a member of the European Union. We also hope that similar agreements and international treaties on legal assistance will become subject of discussion between Belarus and other member states of the European Union,” the minister added.
