Belarus signs agreement on trans-European transport network

Belarus signs agreement on trans-European transport networkBRUSSELS, 24 November (BelTA) – Belarus signed an agreement to expand the trans-European transport network, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media after the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels on 24 November, BelTA has learned.

“Today, together with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogerini we signed an agreement on the expansion of the trans-European transport network between the EU and the Eastern Partnership countries (all countries concerned joined the document). For us, this is beneficial. Because it is about the funding opportunities in the future, the prospects for upgrading transit transport corridors and flows that go through Belarus,” the minister said.

In his words, Belarus prepared a number of proposals on Eastern Partnership projects. “If we talk about concrete projects, there are many of them. Some projects need to be finalized and discussed, including together with our European partners. Today’s conclusion of the agreement on expanding trans-European transport cooperation is also partly a result of our proposals,” Vladimir Makei noted.

Belarus suggested focusing joint efforts on the areas of cooperation which are important for the country. These include transit, border infrastructure, and regional projects. “We understand that for the EU such cooperation is also more interesting as compared to the allocation of funds for some projects in Belarus. Concrete projects are currently on the table in the EU. They are related to our cooperation in transport, energy and logistics, i.e. the sectors important for Belarus,” the minister said.
