Belarus prime minister welcomes Union State’s single visa idea

MOSCOW, 29 September (BelTA) – The idea of introducing common visas in the Union State of Belarus and Russia has a lot of promise and will be discussed. Prime Minister of Belarus Andrei Kobyakov made the statement after the session of the Council of Ministers of the Union State of Belarus and Russia in Moscow on 29 September, BelTA has learned.

Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev put forward the idea of introducing such visas during the session of the Union State Council of Ministers. He said: “I don’t think the project will radically change the situation concerning travels to and in Belarus and Russia but it will add a new juridical quality. If the relevant agreement was signed, Belarus and Russia would create a small Schengen zone. The agreement would enable common rules for entering and leaving the two countries. It is important because international migration practice is very complicated. We would not like our countries to face the kind of problems the European Union has encountered. But unified visa regulations are important in this regard.”

Yet Dmitry Medvedev mentioned that unification will in no way strip either country of its sovereign right to decide on non grata persons.
