Belarus president wants teacher salaries fixed in 2018

MINSK, 24 August (BelTA) – The size of salaries Belarusian teachers are paid will have to be fixed next year. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko gave the relevant instructions during the plenary session of the Nationwide Conference on Teaching on 24 August, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko said: “We didn’t press the issue but during the latest report I warned the education minister and the vice premier that the problem of teachers complaining about low salaries should be fixed next year. I am not talking about the size of salaries.”

The president pointed out that teachers and doctors represent the ideological and moral foundation of the Belarusian society. “Teachers and doctors comprise the foundation of today’s youth organizations, trade unions, and public organizations. Particularly local intellectuals, who work with people. When we need to deliver a message to the nation, we do it through you. You are the key pillar of the Belarusian state,” Alexander Lukashenko told the pedagogues.

Alexander Lukashenko remarked that there are good education institutions in Belarus where teachers are paid decent salaries but the state of affairs is quite the contrary in many other institutions. “The problem should be fixed. I am not talking about the size because I don’t know what that size will be. But the salaries should be enough to make you feel ashamed if you ask for a raise knowing the amount of work you do,” stressed the head of state. “Certainly, everyone, including any teacher, wants a larger salary. But it will depend on the development of the economy.”

The president added that Belarusians often compare teacher salaries in Belarus to those in other countries. “The bulk of the education in Belarus is free. And we invest heavily in it. Certainly, we make teachers and professors a bit poorer. In other countries things are different: since all education is not free, the money is used to help teachers and professors. Which way are we going to choose? There will be various approaches and the minister knows about it but we should definitely make the step I was talking about with regard to salaries,” stated Alexander Lukashenko.

According to the head of state, the problem is particularly painful for employees in preschool education institutions since every Belarusian understands how hard being a teacher in a children daycare center is. “We treat most unfairly those, who work in children daycare centers. We have to nearly double their revenues by any means necessary next year,” said the president.
