MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) - Belarus has presented the draft resolution Improving the Coordination of Efforts against Trafficking in Persons at the UN. The document was considered at a meeting of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York, BelTA has learned.

The draft resolution was co-sponsored by around 40 countries, including Venezuela, Vietnam, Qatar, Kazakhstan, China, North Korea, Laos, Nicaragua, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Belarus has been submitting resolutions aimed at coordinating efforts in the fight against human trafficking for the UN General Assembly's consideration on a regular basis. They have been adopted by consensus since 2006.

This year, the text has undergone some improvements. It places greater emphasis on strengthening multilateral partnerships and on child protection issues. It highlights relevant trends, including trafficking in persons facilitated by new technologies, and the use of artificial intelligence both as a weapon in the hands of traffickers and as a tool for combating these crimes and assisting victims.

The updated draft resolution calls for enhanced cooperation and coordination among countries of origin, transit, and destination to suppress criminal activities and dismantle criminal networks, including through improved information exchange.

The document contains updated information on the activities of the Inter-Agency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, and the relevant mandate-holders of the special procedures of the Human Rights Council.

“By holding the maximum possible number of consultations, which were open to all interested parties, a series of bilateral and multilateral negotiations, and by taking into account the views and wishes of all sides, we managed to ensure that all this year's innovations were agreed upon by all consultation participants and are also consensus-based,” the Permanent Mission of Belarus to the UN explained.

The draft resolution was supported within the UN General Assembly's Third Committee. It will now be put forward for consideration by the General Assembly.
