Belarus, Poland to finance 11 joint science projects

MINSK, 28 November (BelTA) – Belarus and Poland will co-finance eleven joint projects in electronics, ICT, new materials, mechanical engineering, and agricultural technology, Chairman of Belarus’ State Science and Technology Committee Alexander Shumilin said at the 12th session of the Belarusian-Polish intergovernmental commission on cooperation in science and technology in Warsaw on 28 November, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Science and Technology Committee.

The projects were selected through a contest of Belarus-Poland joint science and technology projects for 2018-2019 in the important fields of bilateral cooperation. “Our countries have signed over 50 agreements and memorandums in science and technology. They lay a solid legal framework for interaction and close contacts, including those between universities,” Alexander Shumilin underlined.

The participants of the session are discussing the development of science, technology, and innovations in Belarus and Poland, exchange views on the promising avenues of interaction in these fields and the implementation of joint projects. At the end of the session, the sides are expected to adopt an executive program of Belarus-Poland cooperation in science and technology for 2018-2019. The commission is also set to sign an agreement on scientific cooperation between the Institute for Nuclear Problems of Belarusian State University and the Polish synchrotron radiation facility Solaris, a contract between Belarusian State Technological University and the Polish Institute of Environmental Protection, and seal a deal between Belarusian National Technical University and Lublin University of Technology to implement the cooperation agreement in 2018-2020.

In 2013-2015, Belarusian State Technological University and Bialystok University of Technology in cooperation with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development arranged three summer schools in Poland, Belarus, and Germany, the press service recalled. These school provided students with valuable knowledge and practical skills in ecology, forestry, and rational natural resource management. Over the last 15 years, the Belarusian National Foundation for Fundamental Research financed almost 110 joint projects with Poland, which account for one-fifth of all joint projects with foreign participation supported by the foundation.

Belarus and Poland maintain bilateral collaboration in science and technology in accordance with the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in science and technology signed 25 years ago, on 18 November 1992.
