Belarus’ peace-loving nature emphasized

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – Belarus does not want to be a source of tensions in the region and does not threaten anyone, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei as saying during the first conference of Belarus’ honorary consuls, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei said: “When some parties try to enforce the opinion that due to its close ties with Russia Belarus represents a threat to neighbors — Ukraine, the Baltic states or Poland… It is understandable that if one starts looking for excuses, it will seem that one is guilty of something. In response we can resolutely state that no threats against any countries have ever originated from our territory and never will. We never intend to wage a war against someone. We don’t want to allow some additional foreign military bases in our country because we understand that it will be used by our foreign partners to make an adequate response, that it will only lead to higher tensions. We don’t want to be a source of tensions. I think you can use this premise in your work.”

Tolerance, interethnic and interfaith accord represent some of the best traits of Belarus. The unique value of these phenomena is recognized today when the world is rattled by wars, civil conflicts, and terrorist attacks. “Belarus is the only ex-USSR country, which have not witnessed and, I am sure, will not witness any armed conflicts. Unlike virtually all of our neighbors we have no territorial claims or other claims against other countries. We understand that today it is necessary to act bearing in mind the reality we have, the borders, within which we live. We have no intention of presenting claims against anyone in the future,” noted Vladimir Makei.

Vladimir Makei reminded what the Belarus president told his Ukrainian counterpart once: “Are you talking about threats? I can assure you that if we come here, we will not come riding a combat tank but a tractor or a harvester.” “I think it says a lot,” Vladimir Makei was convinced.
