Belarus’ participation in UN peacekeeping operations discussed in Minsk

MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) – Prospects of expanding Belarus’ participation in peacekeeping operations of the United Nations Organization were discussed as Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas met with a delegation of the UN Secretariat on 14 May, BelTA has learned. The delegation was led by Levent Bilman, division head in the Political Affairs, Peacebuilding, and Peacemaking Operations Department of the UN Secretariat.

Andrei Dapkiunas drew attention of the UN delegation to Belarus’ initiatives designed to preserve peace in the region, establish a broad international dialogue to prevent conflicts and build up trust between nations.

In turn, Levent Bilman spoke highly of Belarus’ role in organizing the negotiation process designed to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. He also spoke positively about Belarus’ efforts to achieve the sustainable development goals and about the country’s initiative to combine efforts of countries in the region and facilitate the sharing of the best practices in this field.

The sides discussed prospects of expanding Belarus’ participation in UN peacemaking operations. A number of matters concerning possibilities of taking Belarus-UN interaction in other areas to the next level were mentioned as well.

The sides also discussed the organization of a joint international conference on fighting terrorism in all its manifestations, including using modern technologies. The conference is due to take place in Minsk in September 2019.

Participants of the meeting confirmed mutual interest in continuing the practice of regular political contacts between Belarus’ leadership and the UN Secretariat.
