Belarus’ NOC delegation participates in General Assembly of European Olympic Committees in Budapest

MINSK, 13 June (BelTA) – Secretary General of Belarus’ National Olympic Committee Kseniya Sankovich and Head of the International Relations Department Vasily Yurchik represented the organization at the General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in Budapest, the NOC press service told BelTA.

Kirsty Coventry addressed the EOC General Assembly for the first time in her capacity as President of the International Olympic Committee. The IOC head touched upon all the changes proposed to be made to the Olympic Charter. In particular, she noted that sport can play a unifying role only by remaining neutral and independent of political influence.

“This is possible only if politics does not take precedence over sport, and athletes are valued for their achievements rather than for the country they represent. The Olympic Games have a unique power to unite people, foster mutual understanding, and build bridges. We should collectively help materialize these principles. They have to apply to everyone equally,” Kirsty Coventry stressed.

The main topics of the forum were the European Games 2027 in Istanbul and the upcoming European Youth Olympic Festivals. In the course of the assembly the delegation of Belarus’ NOC held a number of meetings with colleagues from continental NOCs and representatives of European and international sport federations to discuss the matter of a full-scale return of Belarusian athletes to the global arena.
