Belarus’ MPs hope to meet with UN secretary general in Vienna in August

Belarus’ MPs hope to meet with UN secretary general in Vienna in August

MINSK, 27 February (BelTA) – The Belarusian MPs would like to meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament due in Vienna in August 2020, Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko said as he met with UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki, BelTA has learned.

The conference will focus on international parliamentary cooperation. “Perhaps, during the event we will have an opportunity to meet with the UN secretary general. There is plenty to talk about, including the Belarusian president’s initiative to set up a belt of digital good neighborliness, environmental issues, and green economy,” Vladimir Andreichenko noted.

Vladimir Andreichenko and Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki discussed participation of the House of Representatives in the celebrations of the UN 75th anniversary. Vladimir Andreichenko spoke about some events planned by Belarusian MPs. For example, on 26 June (on the day the UN Charter was signed in San Francisco in 1945) the Belarusian parliament will hold a roundtable to discuss the place and role of the UN in the 21st century. Vladimir Andreichenko pointed out that Belarus was at the origins of the UN and has always championed greater role of the organization in ensuring peace and stability.

Vladimir Andreichenko turned attention to meaningful relations with the UN Office in Belarus. “We highly value its contribution to the country’s development,” he said. In 2019, Belarus ranked 23rd among 162 countries in the SDG Index. That was possible also thanks to the efforts of the UN agencies that operate in the country. “We still have a lot of work to do. We intend to cooperate closely in order to perform even better in 2020,” Vladimir Andreichenko stressed. He added that he was speaking not just about some targets, but about people’s lives, better education and healthcare, and solutions to social issues.

The parties also discussed matters regarding drafting the UN-Belarus cooperation framework for 2021-2025. Vladimir Andreichenko informed that the parliament is supervising this process and will join the implementation of the document once it is adopted.
