Belarus' MFA urged to take a more proactive approach

MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – The work of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and all the stakeholders should be based on a proactive rather than a reactive approach, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at the final board session of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the results of work in 2017 with the participation of Belarus’ Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov on 7 February, BelTA informs.

“Otherwise, we will be lagging behind, with all the ensuing consequences,” the minister.

According to him, the foreign economic goals formulated by the head of state remain unchanged. These are to enhance the efficient foreign economic activity, preserve traditional markets, develop new markets and secure a foothold on them, and also attract serious, promising investors to the country.

In 2017, forty-nine foreign institutions secured higher exports, nine others registered a decline. “The results are worse than those of the previous year,” Vladimir Makei said. He stressed that principled assessment would be given to the work of the heads of the foreign institutions that failed to meet the forecasts.

According to the minister, the meeting will focus on regional problems and tasks on the example of the key countries. “I would like to hear from ambassadors and director-level representatives how the new export strategy, based on optimizing its commodity and geographical structure, is being implemented,” he said.

In his opinion, further efforts at international venues, first of all the UN and the OSCE, should be directed to solving foreign economic problems. For example, it is possible to attract advanced technologies, innovations, and know-how to the country through joint projects on sustainable development.

Vladimir Makei is convinced that a significant potential remains in increasing exports of tourism, educational, medical and other types of services. In his opinion, a visa facilitation policy is a working tool of attracting foreign tourists to Belarus.

The minister stated that the relevant proposals of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are regularly submitted to the country’s leadership. They were discussed in detail and approved during the meeting chaired by the president in January. “This issue will also be the focus of discussion today,” the minister said.
