Belarus MFA to issue recommendations over martial law in Ukraine

Belarus MFA to issue recommendations over martial law in Ukraine

MINSK, 29 November (BelTA) – On obtaining all the necessary information the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus will draw up the recommendations for Belarusian citizens in connection with the martial law in Ukraine, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media, BelTA has learned.

“So far the information that we have is based solely on media reports. The Belarusian Embassy in Ukraine has been instructed to obtain clarifications on the martial law and its implications,” the minister said.

We will draw up the recommendations for Belarusian citizens once we analyze all the information available to us, he added.

Vladimir Makei mentioned the statement made earlier by the Ukrainian ambassador to Belarus that Ukraine has no plans to restrict the movement of Belarusian citizens across the border. “As for our trade, economic, humanitarian contacts and relations, we hope that the decision [on the martial law] will not bring any negative consequences,” the minister added.

Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko signed a law approving the decree "On the introduction of martial law in Ukraine", BelTA learned from Ukrinform. The decree was signed on 26 November. On the same day, the Verkhovna Rada approved the introduction of the martial law for 30 days. In an interview with Ukrainian TV channels, Petro Poroshenko explained that the period of the martial law imposed in ten regions of Ukraine will end on 26 December and cannot be extended by the president without the corresponding decision of the Verkhovna Rada. The martial law was declared in the wake of the incident in the Kerch Strait.
