Belarus lodges protest with Lithuanian Chargé d'Affaires over border breach by drone

Belarus lodges protest with Lithuanian Chargé d'Affaires over border breach by drone

MINSK, 21 May (BelTA) - Chargé d'Affaires of Lithuania in Belarus Erikas Vilkanecas has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus. A firm protest was lodged with him over yet another gross violation of Belarus’ state border by an unmanned aerial vehicle operating from Lithuanian territory. This was announced by Ruslan Varankov, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BelTA has learned.

“On 17 May 2026, Ukraine’s Chaika unmanned aerial vehicle, which had originally been heading toward Russian territory to strike targets there, was detected near the village of Stanislavtsy in Dokshitsy District, Vitebsk Oblast,” said Ruslan Varankov. “Lithuania took no action to prevent the combat drone from entering Belarusian territory, including timely notification of the Belarusian Armed Forces, unlike the measures that Belarus takes in similar situations.”

The spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that these actions constitute a direct threat to Belarus’ security and are a gross violation of international legal norms.

“Belarus demands that Lithuania conduct an investigation into this incident, promptly provide detailed information about the circumstances of the incident, and take comprehensive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future,” said Ruslan Varankov.
