Belarus, Kazakhstan discuss bilateral ties

ASTANA, 26 January (BelTA-KAZINFORM) – Issues of bilateral cooperation, including the development of inter-parliamentary dialogue, were discussed at a meeting between Chairman of Kazakhstan’s Majilis (lower house of the parliament) Nurlan Nigmatulin and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Kazakhstan Anatoly Nichkasov, the Majilis press service informed.

The parties exchanged opinions on Nursultan Nazarbayev’s statement on redistribution of power between the branches of government in Kazakhstan. Nurlan Nigmatulin emphasized Nursultan Nazarbayev’s commitment to democracy and enhanced accountability of the state bodies. Anatoly Nichkasov stressed for his part that the Kazakhstan President’s initiatives demonstrate a high degree of maturity of all the branches of government.

“Belarus follows the progress in the implementation of the current programs in Kazakhstan. We consider reforms carried out by the President of Kazakhstan as a great example of effective development, the right response to the current economic and political situation. We believe the efforts invested by the President of Kazakhstan promote peace in the region and worldwide,” said Anatoly Nichkasov.

The Belarusian diplomat thanked Kazakhstan for support of Belarus in obtaining the observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-building Measures in Asia (CICMA).

The parties praised productive bilateral cooperation the two countries have achieved over the 25 years of diplomatic relations. According to Nurlan Nigmatulin, the two countries developed a solid legal framework of cooperation which totals more than 70 bilateral documents signed at different levels. It was also noted that Kazakhstan and Belarus have broadly similar views on the issues of regional and international policies.

Kazakhstan is among Belarus’ top three trading partners in the CIS. Nurlan Nigmatulin stressed that in order to boost trade it is important to use both the existing potential between the two countries and also new opportunities of the Eurasian Economic Union.

The Speaker of the Majilis expressed confidence that Kazakhstan and Belarus will continue expanding cooperation within Kazakhstan’s nonpermanent membership in the UN Security Council.

Speaking about the development of relations between Kazakhstani and Belarusian MPs, the parties emphasized the importance of intensifying the activity of inter-parliamentary groups on cooperation as well as contacts between committees.
