Belarus’ Justice Ministry, OHCHR to cooperate in mediation

Photo by the Ministry of Justice of BelarusMINSK, 12 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian Justice Ministry and the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) plan to develop cooperation in mediation, BelTA learned from the ministry’s website.

During the visit of the OHCHR technical mission to Belarus, the Justice Ministry hosted a meeting with experts of the Europe and Central Asia Branch of the OHCHR Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division Alexandre Girard and Joana Miquel Gelabert.

The OHCHR experts were updated on the implementation of the National Human Rights Action Plan.

Photo by the Ministry of Justice of BelarusThe participants of the meeting outlined possible areas of cooperation, including in improving the ways to involve the society in the discussion of new regulatory legal acts, the development of mediation as an alternative means of conflict resolution. The focus was also on training members of public commissions monitoring the observance of the fundamental rights of convicted individuals.

The experts paid a visit to Belarus to study the country’s needs and determine the OHCHR potential in providing expert, consultative and other assistance in the realization of the ministerial plan on the implementation of the recommendations adopted by Belarus following the second Universal Periodic Review of the United Nations Human Rights Council and the recommendations directed to the country by the human rights treaty bodies for 2016-2019.
