Belarus, Japan discuss alleviation of nuclear power plant accident consequences

MINSK, 24 March (BelTA) – Chief of the International Cooperation Office of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry Dmitry Tkachuk met with Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan in Belarus Tomonori Hasegawa at the ministry’s Life Safety Educational Center on 24 March in order to discuss matters concerning the alleviation of consequences of nuclear power plant accidents, BelTA has learned.

The meeting was organized upon the initiative of the Japanese side. Participants of the meeting discussed the possibility of resuming Belarus-Japan cooperation in overcoming consequences of radiation accidents, in particular, within the framework of the joint committee on implementing an intergovernmental agreement in this field. “Since its inception in 2013, the committee has been working rather actively: several sessions have been held, during which the restoration of territories affected by radioactive pollution were discussed,” representatives of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry said.

Interaction was also intensive after the accident at the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant in Japan. “Belarus provided humanitarian aid to Japan for the sake of overcoming consequences of the accident. The necessary assistance was provided upon the request of the Japanese side with studying Belarus’ experience of alleviating consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe. In that period over 50 delegations and over 400 experts visited Belarus,” the source added.

Agreements were reached today on continued contacts with regard to the implementation of the agreement on cooperation in overcoming consequences of nuclear power plant accidents.
