MINSK, 3 June (BelTA) – Belarus and Italy will hold a session of the intergovernmental economic commission in Rome on 25 June, Belarus’ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Evgeny Shestakov said on 3 June at an event to celebrate the Italian National Day - Republic Day, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus is proud of having cultivated good, open and friendly relations with Italy over the years of independence. A Belarusian-Italian dialogue is not only about bilateral institutional contacts, not only about cooperation between our states in international organizations, but first of all it is about extensive experience of public diplomacy, solid humanitarian and personal contacts, new families, adoption and recuperation of children. All this created a foundation that cannot be destroyed by any political circumstances,” the diplomat noted.

In his words, this foundation paved the way for increasing constructive official contacts at various levels. “A recent testimony to that was the hospitality demonstrated by the Italian side during the visit of Belarus’ Premier Sergei Rumas to Italy in February. The agreements reached during the visit gave a positive impetus to bilateral cooperation, including business contacts,” Evgeny Shestakov said.

He expressed confidence that the session of the Belarus-Italy intergovernmental economic commission in Rome will become another important milestone in the history of bilateral cooperation.

Evgeny Shestakov thanked Italy’s executive and legislative branches of power for their openness and pragmatism that helped intensify a bilateral interparliamentary and intersectoral dialogue. Minsk has recently hosted a meeting of the vice-speakers of the upper houses of the parliaments of Belarus and Italy. The Belarus-Italy friendship group resumed its work in the Italian parliament. The ratification of bilateral agreements in education and science is nearing completion.

Evgeny Shestakov thanked the Italian side for their assistance in arranging a stunning ceremony to light up the Flame of Peace torch for the 2nd European Games.

“The capacity of Belarus-Italy cooperation has not been exhausted. This is particularly true for the economic sector. Belarus wants to see more Italian investment in our country. This also pertains to projects that provide for advancing to the vast market of the Eurasian Economic Union,” he said.
