Belarus invites OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group to discuss regional cooperation in Minsk

MINSK, 9 July (BelTA) - Belarus invited the OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group to discuss the potential for cooperation in the region in Minsk, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

Members of the Belarusian parliamentary delegation took part in the meeting of the OSCE PA Silk Road Support Group in Berlin on 8 July. Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Boleslav Pirshtuk addressed the event and suggested the theme of the international conference of the group due in Minsk in the spring of 2019 should focus on the potential for cooperation in the region, including the opportunities for Belarus as an important link in the development of the Silk Road economic belt, the press service informed. Boleslav Pirshtuk also noted that the group is growing into an effective parliamentary platform for discussion of a diverse range of issues of political, trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation.

During the meeting the group elected two vice-chairpersons and supported the application for membership of the French delegation.

The Belarusian MPs took an active part in the work of the OSCE PA General Committees. The members of the Belarusian delegation outlined the position of Belarus on the substantive items on the international agenda. Boleslav Pirshtuk addressed the General Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment and suggested facilitating the economic progress in the OSCE region through the development of human capital, promotion of the models of good governance, fight against corruption and money-laundering, through innovation and promotion of the digital economy. He drew the attention of members to the OSCE PA draft resolution initiated by the Belarusian MPs on promotion of the digital economy in order to ensure economic growth in the OSCE region. The document deals with the issues of transition and adaptation of society to the digital economy, harmonization of standards and international cooperation in order to bring states closer and digitalize international trade. The draft resolution will be considered at a meeting of the General Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment.

Deputy Valery Voronetsky addressed the General Committee on Political Affairs and Security. Hr spoke about the initiative of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko put forwards at the 26th annual session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Minsk. The Belarusian leader stated that it was necessary to launch a new large-scale international dialogue on security matters similar to Helsinki. The head of state suggested Helsinki-2 should help overcome the existing contradictions in the relations between the states in the Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian space. Valery Voronetsky confirmed Belarus' readiness to continue to work actively in the OSCE in combating transnational threats and challenges. For example, Minsk will host the OSCE high-level anti-terrorist conference on 9-20 October.

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly annual session is running in Berlin on 7 -11 July. The Belarusian delegation is headed by Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives Boleslav Pirshtuk.
