Belarus invites Lithuania to work out nuclear power plant emergency notification procedure

MINSK, 14 September (BelTA) – The Belarusian Energy Ministry invites Lithuania to work together to determine the procedure for notifying each other about emergencies at nuclear power plants, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk after the second round of Belarusian-Lithuanian consultations about the Belarusian nuclear power plant on 14 September.

The official noted: “There are procedures for notifying neighboring countries, mass media, and the general public about incidents after nuclear fuel is delivered to the relevant installations. But for now we don’t have a notification procedure for when such installations are being built. We invited the Lithuanian side to start negotiations, set up a working group and work out how we can notify each other and about what events we should notify each other in order to rule out misunderstandings down the road.”

The Deputy Energy Minister said he hopes that the Lithuanian side would agree to the proposal and the notification procedure would be worked out. “If there is a notification procedure in place, we will not have any misunderstandings in these matters,” he believes.
