Belarus interested in observer status at Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference

MINSK, 6 August (BelTA) – Belarus would like to get an observer status at the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference, Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko said at a session of the Council of the House of Representatives on 6 August, BelTA has learned.

Participants of the session discussed short-term plans to promote inter-parliamentary ties. Belarusian MPs are expected to take part in the 28th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference due in Oslo on 25-27 August. “This event should be used to strengthen the country's positions in the region and to further our interests in this organization. Our goal is to get an observer status at the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference,” he said.

In early September Switzerland will host the International Parliamentary Conference of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's Silk Road Support Group. The previous conference took place in Belarus. This time the conference will focus on the initiative to make the Belt and Road a driver of efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

In September Nur-Sultan will host a meeting of parliament speakers of Eurasian countries. Taking part in this big forum will also be Belarusian MPs. Their goal is to polish the image of the national parliament on the international arena.

“A Polish delegation led by deputy Sejm marshal is expected to visit Belarus. This will be a great opportunity to scale up cooperation with Polish counterparts,” the speaker informed. Visits of parliamentary delegations of Turkey and Slovakia are also under consideration.

The Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) was established in 1991 as a forum for political dialogue between parliamentarians from the Baltic Sea Region. BSPC promotes and drives various initiatives and efforts to support a sustainable environmental, social and economic development of the Baltic Sea Region. It strives at enhancing the visibility of the Baltic Sea Region and its issues in a wider European context. Its permanent members are Germany, Denmark, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, as well as five inter-parliamentary organizations (Baltic Assembly, European Parliament, PACE, OSCE PA, Nordic Council). Observers to BSPC are 27 organizations.
