Belarus, IAEA discuss ratification of Amendment to CPPNM

MINSK, 12 April (BelTA) – The possibility of Belarus’ ratification of the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) was discussed during a visit of an expert mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to Minsk, BelTA learnt from the Communication and PR Department of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor).

A high-level meeting featuring representatives of government bodies was held at the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the IAEA mission. A working meeting with specialists from interested government bodies and organizations took place at the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry.

In 1993 Belarus confirmed its legal succession in respect to one of the most important international documents in nuclear security - the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material of 1979. Taking into account the experience of different countries and its generalization, the country constantly improves its approaches to ensuring nuclear security. The Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material is no exception. At present a number of countries, including Belarus, are considering possible ratification of the Amendment to the convention. The IAEA representatives provided the details on the changes suggested by the Amendment, advantages and challenges for the countries once they ratify the document.

“The information Belarus got, the further questions to international experts will help elaborate a well-grounded and balanced position towards the adoption of the Amendment,” the specialists noted.
