Belarus grateful to Japan for help in dealing with Chernobyl aftermath

MINSK, 31 January (BelTA) – The Belarusian people are grateful to Japan for assistance in the mitigation of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident, Viktor Rybak, Head of the Department for Asia, Australia and Oceania of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a meeting held in the House of Friendship on 31 January to mark the 25th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Belarus and Japan, BelTA has learned.

The representative of the Belarusian ministry stressed: “Over the time our countries have reached great results in mutual understanding and cooperation.” “We appreciate the constructive character of our relations and consider the cooperation with Japan as an important prospect for boosting foreign policy in Asia. The two countries have been gradually developing political dialogue, holding regular bilateral ministerial consultations. Belarus and Japan have been closely cooperating in the international arena on the issues of current international importance,” said Viktor Rybak.

Viktor Rybak noted that, with similar approaches to key international issues, the two states are both aimed at expanding economic, scientific and humanitarian contacts. The two countries have achieved great progress in developing ties in tourism and sport, education, culture, nature management and healthcare. Viktor Rybak expressed confidence that this cooperation would continue expanding on the principles of friendship that link the Belarusian and Japanese nations.

The two countries have recently improved the exchange of contacts both in the political and humanitarian sectors, and also between businessmen. “We are ready to exert every effort for the further development of the Belarusian-Japanese trade and economic cooperation, expand interregional contacts that have a potential for strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation. The Belarusian people are grateful to Japan for its help and assistance in the mitigation of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear accident. In turn, Belarus provided immediate technological and information assistance to Japan after the Fukushima 1 nuclear accident,” the representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Viktor Rybak believes that mutual assistance and support provided in difficult situations demonstrated the countries’ openness for cooperation, serving the bedrock of the future relations.

Partaking in the meeting were representatives of ministries and agencies, the Belarusian Society of Friendship and Cultural Ties with Foreign Countries, and also students.
