Belarus gets observer status in Afro-Asian Legal Consultative Organization

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – Belarus has been granted the observer status in the Afro-Asian Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO), BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the first meeting of the 55th session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization on 17 May 2016 its Member States unanimously voted to grant the observer status to the Republic of Belarus, the pres service said. “Participation of the Republic of Belarus in the AALCO activities as an observer will strengthen its ties and legal framework with Asian and African countries in a context of ongoing work on diversification and extension of cooperation not only with traditional partners of the Republic of Belarus in the CIS and Europe, but also with other countries and regional organizations”, the press service added.

The ministry stressed that Belarus already discusses most topical international legal issues of regional and universal cooperation within the framework of the CIS Consultative Committee of Directors of Legal Services of Ministries of Foreign Affairs as well as of the Committee of Legal Advisers on Public International Law within the Council of Europe (CAHDI).

The AALCO is a regional forum for exchanging views on international law matters relating to activities of UN, WTO and other international organizations. The Organization has close links with the International Court of Justice and the International Law Commission.

The AALCO presently have 47 countries as its members such as Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Botswana, Cameroon, Cyprus, DPR of Korea, Gambia, Ghana, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, China, Qatar, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, the UAE, and Yemen. Australia, New Zealand, Russia, the USA, Vietnam and Eretria have the status of Observers.

The Headquarters of AALCO is located in New Delhi (India). The AALCO sessions are also conducted during annual international law event in the UN Headquarters in New York.
