Belarus, EU may initial visa agreement in May

MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) – Belarus and the European Union may initial an agreement on visa facilitation at the forthcoming Eastern Partnership summit in Riga in May 2015, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Belgium, Permanent Representative in the EU Andrei Yevdochenko said in an interview to Belarus One TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“If everything goes well, I do not see any serious disagreements which can hamper Belarus and the EU to initial or even sign the agreement on visa liberalization in Riga in May,” the Ambassador said.

As was informed, the EU and Belarus have already held a number of consultations on the issue. The Belarus-EU talks might result in cheaper visas for Belarusian citizens, head of the EU Delegation in Belarus Maira Mora told BelTA in December 2014. Visa facilitation may include a reduction of the Schengen visa cost, changed requirements to the document packages and might result in the increasing number of people exempted from visa duties. Besides, there is an opportunity to extend the duration of visas for people with a good visa history, Maira Mora said then.

The official noted that every stage of talks bring results. However, the positions of the sides and the adopted agreements can not be voiced yet. “Every round of talks addressed a number of issues. There are certain problems related, for instance, to the peculiarities of the legislation of each side. They are gradually addressed. The results of the talks cannot be made public until some agreement is made. It is the global practice,” she explained.
