MINSK, 4 September (BelTA) – Belarus and Ecuador can mutually close their embassies, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said in an interview with Belarus 1 TV channel on 4 September, BelTA informs.
“The president was informed that we have no special progress with Ecuador, and Ecuador decided on 21 August to close 10 or 12 foreign institutions in various countries, including Belarus. We also analyzed the situation and came to the conclusion that taking into account the level of our relations, the economic situation in Ecuador, we have no special prospects in terms of export development to that country,” the minister said.
According to him, the Belarusian leader instructed to analyze the situation and make a concrete proposal on closing the embassy in Ecuador and the possible transfer of this embassy to a different country in terms of promising cooperation development. “We have such countries on the Latin American continent,” Vladimir Makei said.
He also said that over the past five or six years Belarus has opened about eight new foreign embassies and two consulates. “Today, it is a total of 68 foreign missions in 57 countries. Decisions on deploying foreign missions are taken on a basis of thorough analysis of the prospects for cooperation development,” the minister said.
