Belarus comments on Latvia’s plans to build fence along common border

MINSK, 9 March (BelTA) – The construction of engineering structures on the state border is a normal practice aimed at ensuring its effective and cost-efficient protection, Anton Bychkovsky, an official representative of Belarus State Border Committee, told BelTA as he commented on Latvia’s plans to build a fence along its border with Belarus on 9 March.

“Strengthening security on the state border, including by building engineering structures, is a normal practice that facilitates the work of border guards and ensures effective and cost-efficient protection of the state border,” Anton Bychkovsky noted.

He pointed out that Belarus is also conducting similar work along its border. “We are also building engineering structures, including fences fitted with cutting-edge border protection equipment. These can be alarm sensors, video surveillance system, and other intelligent systems,” Anton Bychkovsky said.

Belarusian and Latvian border guard agencies cooperate closely. “We maintain dialogue and have understanding on all current issues,” the official representative of Belarus State Border Committee noted.

The media reported earlier that the Latvian State Border Guard Service plans to build a fence stretching dozens of kilometers along the border with Belarus.
