Belarus becomes co-founder of world AI cooperation organization

MINSK, 17 July (BelTA) – An agreement establishing the World AI Cooperation Organization (WAICO) was signed in Shanghai. Belarus is among the founding member states of the new international organization, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Communications and Informatization.
The agreement was signed by representatives of 29 founding countries. On behalf of Belarus, the document was signed by Minister of Communications and Informatization of the Republic of Belarus Kirill Zalessky.
A new international organization was established at the initiative of the People's Republic of China to unite the efforts of countries in the field of development of artificial intelligence technologies. The organization will operate as an independent intergovernmental body with headquarters in Shanghai. Its key objectives include promoting innovation, bridging the digital divide between countries, jointly managing risks, and ensuring safe, ethical, and trustworthy AI.
Among WAICO’s core functions are creating a platform to coordinate AI supply and demand, strengthening international cooperation in competency building, and developing common approaches to technical standards and governance principles. The organization will also promote the development of the open-source AI ecosystem and support global governance processes within the United Nations.
Belarus has gained international recognition as a regional leader in artificial intelligence thanks to its strong scientific potential and the successful development of innovative AI-powered software products by resident companies of the Hi-Tech Park.
“For our country, becoming one of the founders of this new international organization opens up broad opportunities to help shape the international agenda and implement joint international projects in this strategically important area,” Kirill Zalessky said.
The 2026 World AI Conference and the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance are taking place in Shanghai from 17 to 20 July under the theme “AI Partnership for a Brighter Future.”
