Belarus at IPU Assembly: Parliamentary diplomacy can become a tool for resolving economic conflicts

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) - Parliamentary diplomacy can become a tool for resolving economic conflicts, Sergei Aleinik, Chairman of the Standing Commission  on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic, said at a meeting of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development during the 152nd IPU Assembly in Istanbul, Türkiye, BelTA has learned.

Sergei Aleinik stated that no integration project can be successful without a reliable legislative framework. The parliaments of the EAEU member states, for example, are engaged in ongoing work to harmonize national legislations in the tax, customs, and labor spheres. “The CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly drafts model laws that are successfully used in national legal systems. These measures make it possible to create real, not declarative, conditions for economic integration,” Sergei Aleinik noted.

“Furthermore, parliaments can and must resist attempts to use the economy as a weapon. We see how illegal sanctions harm not only the countries against which they are imposed but also global economic stability as a whole. Parliamentary diplomacy can become a tool for resolving such conflicts,” he added.

Sergei Aleinik emphasized that the Belarusian parliament maintains constant contacts with colleagues from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, which makes it possible to find alternative logistics routes, ensure complementary markets, and create joint projects. “We are convinced: the more active inter-parliamentary ties are, the more difficult it will be to use economic instruments for political pressure. Strengthening the global economy is possible, but it will happen on new principles, namely, as a result of cooperation and the alignment of regional processes,” he said.

“Parliaments must become the architects of this cooperation through legislative support for integration, ratification of agreements, and ongoing dialogue that makes it possible to bring approaches closer and find compromises,” he noted.

Additionally, Sergei Aleinik took part in a coordination meeting of the heads of parliamentary delegations from member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization that discussed international events affecting the maintenance of international peace and security. He also held meetings with the leadership of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, and the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania.
