Belarus approves national action plan on gender equality for 2017-2020

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – Belarus has approved its national action plan on gender equality for 2017-2020. The step is laid down in Council of Ministers’ Resolution No.149 of 17 February 2017, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian government.

It is the fifth program document is designed to build up the capacity of gender mainstreaming in the development of state policies in various areas of activity.

The major goals of the national plan is to develop an institutional mechanism of securing gender equality; to expand economic opportunities of women and men; ensure the gender-oriented healthcare; secure gender equality in family relations; combat domestic violence and trafficking in persons; gender education. Gender equality issues will remain vital for development, human security and stable economic growth.

Responsible for the implementation of the national plan are national government bodies, local executive and administrative bodies, scientific and religious organizations, public associations with the help of the financial and technical potential of international organizations.

The events of the national plan will be financed from the national and local budgets and also non-budgetary and other sources allowed by the law.

The national plan will contribute to the state programs aimed at improving the position of men and women in the society. It will also help Belarus fulfill its international commitments in ensuring gender equality and implement country programs of the UN agencies, including UNDP, UNICEF and UNFPA through 2020.

The national plan will also help Belarus achieve the goals and objectives of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

The Labor and Social Security Ministry shall monitor the implementation of the national plan.
