MINSK, 14 February (BelTA) - Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas took part in this year’s first meeting of the UN General Assembly in the format of intergovernmental talks on Security Council reform, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"Andrei Dapkiunas laid out Belarus' approaches to the reform of the UN Security Council and stressed that the negotiation process should be based on the principles of consensus, equality and non-discrimination. The deputy minister noted that only a progressive and mutually respectful dialogue can bring the parties closer to the unanimity on the reform, which plays a crucial role in maintaining international peace and security,” the ministry stressed.

The UN Security Council reform negotiation process was established by a decision of the UN General Assembly in September 2008. During annual UNGA informal meetings states discuss ways to reform the Security Council across such areas as the number of UN Security Council members, membership categories, veto power, fair regional representation and others.
