Assistance of Belarusian diaspora requested to bring back cultural property

MINSK, 17 July (BelTA) – The Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs counts on the assistance of the Belarusian diaspora with searching for cultural property and bringing it back home, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said in an interview with Belarus 1 TV Channel, BelTA has learned.

“We should step up the effort to search for cultural objects in various museums, libraries, and archives of the countries in which Belarus’ diplomatic missions are accredited. From this perspective, the collaboration with the diaspora is essential,” the minister underlined.

He remarked that Belarus has contacted the descendants of the Belarusian native Ignacy Domeyko, the person of national importance to Chile. “A meeting with the members of this family will take place in the near future. We know that many things associated with the name of this eminent Belarusian are staying abroad,” Vladimir Makei stressed.

According to the minister, the return of various cultural property is largely related with expenses. It is not possible to bring every item back to the home country. The task is, however, to provide Belarusians with an opportunity to explore this legacy by holding exhibitions, loaning cultural objects to museums, or making digital copies of such objects.

Vladimir Makei added that there are nearly two million Belarusians living abroad. “This is our cultural, economic, and political asset. The head of state also drew special attention to it,” the minister pointed out.

He emphasized that the perception of Belarus in the world is changing, too. “If a member of diaspora is interested in the development of independent Belarus, I believe he will find ways to contribute to this process,” Vladimir Makei summarized.

As it was reported earlier, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko urged to take a fresh look at the return of cultural property at a meeting to discuss Belarus’ priorities in foreign politics at the present stage on 11 July. The head of state pointed out this is an essential element of the nation’s spiritual identity. The effort in this field, he said, should be made from the angle of the Belarusian legacy in the world.
