Anachronisms noted in European Parliament’s approaches to Belarus

MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) – The European Parliament’s approaches to Belarusian matters demonstrate anachronisms, BelTA learned from Dmitry Mironchik, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The diplomat said: “We would like to note that once again the European Parliament tries to talk to Belarus speaking the language it has been using without success for over 20 years. It is the language of someone, who tries to make declarations without caring whether the words will be heard and understood. Such a language has already become an anachronism in today’s dialogue between Belarus and other European Union bodies as well as EU member states. The language doesn’t work. Belarus and the European Union are creating a new reality in the mutual relations, new effective and democratic formats of communication. Thanks to such formats each side can promote its own interests, principles, and values while respecting interests, principles, and values of the other side. Such communication is productive and benefits both sides.”

“Unfortunately, the latest European Parliament resolution totally ignores this fact, thus trying to devalue diplomatic efforts of the European Union itself. But it is unlikely the authors of the document tried to be objective. They pursued different goals. This is why I don’t think they will be surprised if we treat this document just the way we did other similar resolutions. It seems that their run-of-the-mill resolution is interesting only to its authors,” noted the press secretary.

Nevertheless, the Belarusian side is convinced that sooner or later the European Parliament will assume a stance, which will be more fitting to its reputation as a respected democratic institution and to goals and tasks of the European Union as a whole. “It is only a matter of time,” believes the spokesman of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dmitry Mironchik underlined that Belarus is always ready for constructive interaction with the European Parliament and does not rule out criticism. “However, there is no place for admonitions in such a dialogue,” he added.
