Wiktorin praises Belarus-EU economic cooperation in 2017

MINSK, 22 December (BelTA) – Belarus and the European Union have made considerable headway in the implementation of joint economic projects in 2017, Head of the EU Delegation to Belarus Andrea Wiktorin told the media after the National Bank signed a contract on 22 December to get the EU technical support on the Twinning project, BelTA has learned.

Andrea Wiktorin attended the fourth meeting of the Belarus-EU coordination group that took place in Brussels on 19-20 December. The meeting discussed different areas of cooperation, including economy, finance, energy, and environment. Andrea Wiktorin praised the results of the meeting, noting that it was constructive. “We have outlined the plans for the future. As for the results in 2017, we have achieved a lot, especially in the economic projects launched this year. For example, the European Investment Bank has obtained a mandate on cooperation with Belarus,” noted Andrea Wiktorin.

Among the good examples she also cited a new strategy of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for Belarus and the signing of the contract to continue cooperation in assisting small and medium-sized businesses. “We have a lot of plans to assist regional economic development next year,” Andrei Wiktorin said.

The National Bank of the Republic of Belarus signed a contract on 22 December to implement the Twinning project financed by the European Union to support the country’s banking system. The project will be implemented in 2018-2019 by a consortium of banks: Deutsche Bundesbank, the National Bank of Poland and the Bank of Lithuania. The partner banks will share advanced experience and modern banking operation methods. The budget of the project is €1.15 million.
