Tsekhmeister: Visa-free regime will boost sports tourism in Belarus

MINSK, 9 January (BelTA) – Introducing visa-free regime for a period not exceeding 5 days for travelers from 80 states will boost sport and business tourism, Valentin Tsekhmeister, Director of the National Union of Tourist Organizations, told BelTA.

“Belarus widely advertises its capacities in organizing different kinds of sports competitions. Purposeful efforts are taken in this field, with corresponding applications filed to host events. Problems related to visas often create obstacles for fans. But thanks to this decision we can expect a significant increase in the number of tourists who come to see sporting events,” Valentin Tsekhmeister said.

According to Valentin Tsekhmeister, people travelling on business purposes and visiting Belarus transit can benefit from this opportunity. They will be able to stay in Belarus a bit longer, to get acquainted with the hospitality industry and afterwards they may come to Belarus on holiday,” he added.

There will be no immediate increase in the number of tourists as time is needed for the information to spread. “But the step has been taken, and we welcome it,” Valentin Tsekhmeister added.
