Speaker: Belarus will enhance international cooperation but rely on its own resources

MINSK, 2 April (BelTA) – We will enhance international cooperation but will mainly rely on our own resources, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he opened the sixth session of the sixth-convocation Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus on 2 April, BelTA has learned.

The key priorities of the country’s domestic and foreign policies were outlined during the Big Conversation with the President on 1 March, Mikhail Myasnikovich said. The head of state elaborated, in particular, on the Belarusian-Russian cooperation, integration processes in the Eurasian Economic Union, interaction with China.

“The discussions and the proposals showed that people attach particular attention to national issues: sovereignty, identity, the search for the national idea. Strengthening the independence and preserving the national values are as important today. We will expand and strengthen cooperation with foreign countries but will mainly rely on own own resources,” Mikhail Myasnikovich noted.

Mikhail Myasnikovich also highlighted cooperation with Russia. The Belarus-Russia Union State is a unique integration project which provides additional opportunities for the country’s development and improvement of living standards. “We need to further strengthen Belarus-Russia relations,” the speaker said. He believes that the provisions of the 1999 Union State Treaty on the preservation of sovereignty and independence by each member state and also on joint decision-making with regard to fundamental issues should remain inviolable.

New ideas and areas for the Union State construction will be discussed at the 6th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia which is due in St. Petersburg in July 2019. The forum will highlight youth issues, the development of the common cultural and humanitarian space between the peoples of the two countries. An organizing committee has been set up to draw up the program of the event.

In early 2019, Belarus’ parliamentary delegation paid a visit to Poland. The Belarusian MPs held a number of supreme and high-level meetings which demonstrated the parties’ readiness for open and constructive dialogue. The Belarusian delegation stressed at the talks in Warsaw that Belarus implements a multipronged foreign policy and is interested in the development of international cooperation based on the principles of peacefulness, tolerance and good neighborliness.
