Putin thanks Lukashenko for praising bilateral relations

SAINT PETERSBURG, 21 December (BelTA) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed gratitude to Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko for praising the quality of Russian-Belarusian relations voiced by the Belarusian head of state during a recent session of the Belarusian People’s Congress. The Russian leader made the statement during the meeting with Aleksandr Lukashenko in Saint Petersburg on 21 December, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Putin said he had watched Aleksandr Lukashenko’s speech at the Belarusian People’s Congress on 18 December live and had been very positive about it. “Very profound and, as they say in such cases, well-balanced,” the Russian leader stated.

“Kept it strictly to the point,” the Belarusian president said.

“You always decide yourself what to say. But in my view, it was profound, comprehensive, and balanced, covering both foreign and internal affairs. You examined every issue from every perspective. I listened with great pleasure and interest. I would like to thank you for speaking so highly of our Russian-Belarusian relations. I noticed the warmth with which you spoke about Russia and our ties. I am confident many in Russia noticed it, too,” Vladimir Putin stressed.

Speaking about the agenda of the current meeting and the EAEU summit, the Russian president noted that it includes both matters concerning the development of the union and bilateral relations of Belarus and Russia.

“Although the governments work together very closely,” Vladimir Putin pointed out. He said he had met with the chairman of the Russian government before the arrival in St. Petersburg. The official had informed the head of state in detail about the progress of intergovernmental interaction of the two countries. “Essentially there are practically no [unresolved] matters that would require our attention. Nevertheless, there is always something to talk about,” the Russian president said.
